Rethymnon area

Sprawling around a sleepy fishing harbour againgst a backdrop of craggy hills, Rethymnon boasts a rather aristocratic appearance, with many of its buildings reflecting its sixteenth century occupation by the Venetians. This is a popular resort with plenty to suit all tastes and pockets, from mini-markets and souvenir shops selling a variety of local merchandise, to lots of lively bars around the harbour and in the old city, and myriad restaurants and tavernas serving everything from fast food to fresh fish. The town also has one of the largest sandy beaches on the island, linked by a stretch of rocky coastline to the smaller town of Panormo. Distance from Heraklion/Chania airports approximately 80 kilometres.
